EVENT ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE: 3:30-5:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 2011.

EVENT: Glenda Dickerson, professor of theatre at the University of Michigan’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance, is the inaugural Shirley Verrett Award winner. The annual award, established by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost, honors the legacy of internationally acclaimed opera singer Shirley Verrett, who was also the James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Voice.

A tribute and award ceremony will honor Verrett’s four-decades long career, as well as celebrate Dickerson’s dedication to promoting the success of women of color students and faculty in the creative arts and for her commitment to diversity as part of the University’s mission.

The ceremony will feature performances by two of her former students, Kimberly Haynes and Kimberley Dolanski, as well as video of Verrett’s performances. Colleagues, friends and family will also share their memories of the impact Verrett had on her students, fans and admirers worldwide.

A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is requested. More information and a link to registration can be found at: www.tinyurl.com/shirleyverrettaward or www.cew.umich.edu
