ANN ARBOR— Thirty prototype machines and devices Design Expo ’95 designed and built by University of Michigan mechanical engineering students will be displayed at Design Expo ’95, 1:30-5:30 p.m. April 18, in the atrium of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences Building, 1301 Beal Ave., on the U-M’s North Campus.

The event is free and open to the public. Students will be on hand to answer questions about their prototypes. Elementary, middle and high school students interested in engineering careers are encouraged to attend.

Each semester, teams of undergraduates in the senior mechanical engineering design course are given problems submitted by industry sponsors or U-M faculty. During the 12-week course, students must design and build a working prototype that solves the problem.

Prototypes on display April 18 will include a mobile manual pipe-bending device capable of bending one and one- half-inch metal tubing, which was developed for the U-M Machine Shop; a vending machine that fits in back of an airplane seat designed for Scott Halpert of Ann Arbor; a door module manufacturing system for General Motors in Warren, Mich.; and an automated seat belt positioner developed for Johnson Controls of Brighton, Mich.
