Davidson Institute hosts conference on China energy constraints, implications

EVENT: The William Davidson Institute and Michigan’s Ross School of Business will host a one-day conference entitled” The Energy Future: China and the U.S.” The conference will bring together top experts who have experience in academia, business and government service to address China’s domestic energy constraints and dilemmas, its strategy to gain energy security, the implications for global energy markets, and the actions the U.S. ought to take in response.

The conference will be organized into three sessions.

1. The first is a panel discussion focusing on” China’s Global Search for Energy Security.” The panel will consist of:

? Mikkal Herberg (panel chair), director of the Asian Energy Security Program at the National Bureau of Asian Research in Seattle.

? Mark Levine, director of the Environmental Energy Technologies Division, a research and analysis division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

? Steven W. Lewis, research fellow in Asian Politics and Economics at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, professor of the practice in humanities and director of the Asian Studies Program at Rice University.

2. The keynote luncheon presentation will be given by Ambassador Chas. W. Freeman, Jr., who will address” Wealth, Power, Oil, and Gas: Chinese Affluence and the Global Energy Balance.” Freeman is currently co-chair of the United States-China Policy Foundation and Chairman of Projects International, Inc. He has a long history in the U.S. foreign service.

3. The afternoon panel will focus on” How the U.S. Should Respond?” Participating in the panel will be:

? Kenneth Lieberthal (panel chair), professor of Political Science at U-M, the William Davidson Professor of Business Administration at Michigan’s Ross School of Business, and a Davidson Institute Distinguished Fellow.

? Jeffrey Bader, senior fellow and director of the China Initiative at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C

? Ed Morse, executive advisor at Hess Energy Trading Co., LLC.
