Statement by Rebecca M. Blank, Dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

“The action by the U.S. Congress to appropriate $2 million for programs of the Ford School of Public Policy is an enormously gratifying tribute to former President Gerald R. Ford and his dedication to a life of public service. The Ford School seeks to train future generations of public leaders who will exhibit the dedication, integrity, intelligence and compassion that made President Ford such a model of what we look for in our public officials.

“This week’s Congressional appropriation will enable the School to advance its commitment to furthering the practice and study of public policy. With this new support, the School will expand opportunities to attract top students and to provide a diverse curriculum that prepares students for the challenges of the new century.

“The Ford School is grateful to U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich), U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich), the members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation and Frank Zarb, immediate past chairman of the NASDAQ Stock Market Inc. and former Assistant to the President for Energy Affairs in the Ford Administration, for their tireless dedication to realizing this tribute to former President Ford.”

Statement by Lee C. Bollinger, president of the University of Michigan

“Anchored with the name of distinguished alumnus Gerald R. Ford, the Ford School of Public Policy draws outstanding scholars and policy makers from around the world to the state of Michigan. I am deeply gratified by the action of the U.S. Congress to further the mission of the Ford School and to pay tribute to former President Ford, whom we are proud to claim as an alumnus.

“The focus by the University of Michigan on public policy is especially appropriate for a public university. It provides an important outside perspective for our study, and affords us a means to be of direct public service.” ***

The University was assisted in its efforts by, and extends its appreciation to, U.S. Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich), U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich), the members of the Michigan Congressional Delegation and Frank Zarb, immediate past president of the NASDAQ Stock Market, Inc., and former Assistant to the President for Energy Affairs in the Ford Administration, for all their efforts in winning Congressional support for this tribute to former President Ford.
