Detroit Public Schools CEO to address Kinesiology commencement ANN ARBOR—On
Burnley is no stranger to the Division of Kinesiology. He received his B.S. degree in 1964. In fact, he received all three of his degrees (including master’s and Ph.D.) from the U-M and is recognized, today, as a strong leader and contributor to reform in public education.

Burnley first entered the U-M in 1960. He received a full athletic scholarship in track and field. During his undergraduate days, he was a member of several Big Ten championship track and field teams. In 1968, he became the first Black coach in the history of the U-M. He coached students in the sprint, quarter mile and hurdles. Burnley also coached several Olympic athletes, including Haisley Crawford, the 1976 Olympic Gold Medalist in the 100-meter dash. More than 20 years later, Burnley was appointed chair of the Education Subcommittee for the United States Olympic Committee.

In
Beverly Ulrich, dean of the Division of Kinesiology, says, “Dr. Burnley has promoted educational excellence throughout this country by his personal example as well as his academic leadership. I am truly excited and grateful that he will take time out of his busy schedule as the Detroit Public Schools’ CEO to be our Kinesiology commencement speaker.”
