U-M students recognized with Hopwood Awards for creative writing

ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan students split more than $32,000 in prizes during today’s Hopwood Underclassmen Awards Ceremony.

The Avery and Jule Hopwood Awards in Creative Writing are among the nation’s oldest contests for student writers. The awards are funded by a bequest from Avery Hopwood, a 1905 U-M graduate and successful Broadway playwright, and Jule Hopwood, his mother. Past winners include Arthur Miller, John Ciardi and Marge Piercy.

Hopwood Underclassmen Fiction

  • *Zoya Gurm, Ann Arbor, $800 award for “When the Rains Came.”
  • *Kate Velguth, Mt. Pleasant, Mich., $800 award for “Landscapes,” “Remnants” and “Phantoms.”
  • Daphnecay Cantuba, Keego Harbor, Mich., $1,000 award for “Naomi” and “Dream Girl.”
  • Laura Dzubay, Bloomington, Ind., $1,500 award for “Homes of Children.”

Hopwood Underclassmen Nonfiction

  • *Elena Ramirez-Gorski, Adrian, Mich., $2,000 award for “Essays on Place and Loss.”
  • Kate Velguth, Mt. Pleasant, Mich., $2,000 for “Principle of Sympathetic Resonance,” “Summer,” “Email” and “Dichotomy.”

Hopwood Underclassmen Poetry

  • Julie Moss, Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., $800 award “Thursday’s Child.”
  • Zoya Gurm, Ann Arbor, $1,500 award for “Meanderings.”
  • Miriam Saperstein, Huntington Woods, Mich., $1,500 award for “A Bitter Taste.”

Academy of American Poets Prize

  • Clare Hogan, Chevy Chase, Md., $100 in the graduate division for “A Speculation.”
  • Hannah Klemkow, Flint, Mich., $100 in the undergraduate division for “I Am Waiting by the Damned Concrete Riverside.”

Bain-Swiggett Poetry Prize

  • Jonathan Holland, Ypsilanti, Mich., $650 for “But if He’d Have Said Goodbye.”

Michael R. Gutterman Award in Poetry

  • Fatimah Asghar, Ann Arbor, $500 for “How We Left.”

Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize in Poetry
