Bicycle protection hints ANN ARBOR—Bicycles are a popular way to travel around campus, but they also are one of the most commonly stolen items reported to the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at the University of Michigan, said DPS Sgt. Benny Chenevert.

“One way to protect your bicycle is to register it with the City of Ann Arbor,” Chenevert said. “It only takes minutes to do and it helps us identify your bike if it’s ever stolen.”

Bike registration will take place on the Diag near Angell Hall on Friday (Sept. 5) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Bring a U-M ID and a valid driver’s license or personal ID. Registering your bicycle is a free service offered by DPS during the specified time.

Chenevert offers the following tips for preventing bicycle theft: –Use a U-lock. –Secure both the frame and the wheels with the lock; detach the seat and take it with you if possible. –Lock your bike to bike racks in well-lit, designated areas. –Know where your bike is at all times; avoid parking your bike for days without checking on it. –Keep information, such as color, brand, frame size, wheel size, serial number, etc. to help identify the bike if stolen. –Report immediately to DPS if your bike is stolen or if you see suspicious activity around or near bike racks on campus. –Check your lock to see that it is securely in place before leaving it. –Lock your bike every time it must be left unattended. If you have any questions about bike registration or bicycle safety, call DPS at (313) 763-3434. To report suspicious activity around bicycle racks, call DPS at 763-1131.
