EVENT: A giant mural created by U-M students and installed in Palmer Commons will be officially unveiled at a public reception.

The 11 student artists will discuss their work in the Forum Hall Auditorium, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons adjacent to the mural, prior to the ribbon cutting ceremony.

The mural measuring, 17 feet high and 78 feet long, is titled “Language: The Human Quintessence”. It was created by non-art majors enrolled during the fall 2011 semester in the “Art in Public Spaces/Big Paintings” course in U-M’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

The mural is part of the LSA Winter 2012 theme semester “Language: The Human Quintessence.”

Mark Tucker, art director for LSA’s Lloyd Hall Scholars Program and founder of the popular local FestiFools event, taught the course. He challenged students to design and create a 1,235-square- foot mural incorporating a theme of visual language as a hands-on way to understand the value of creating and exhibiting artwork designed for a public setting.

The mural, installed in the fourth floor south atrium at Palmer Commons, is visible from many positions inside and outside the building.
